Heathrow still one-quarter down on pre-pandemic flights during 2022
Britain’s busiest airport, London Heathrow, handled only three-quarters of pre-pandemic passenger numbers in 2022.
The aviation hub tracked 61.6 million passengers last year, just 76 percent of 2019 levels. In December, the airport handled an average of over 190,000 passengers per day, down 12 percent compared to the corresponding month in 2019, which was the busiest-ever end to a year.
As international travel recovers from the damage caused by Covid-19 related restrictions, the revenue generated from duty-free is more important than ever. Airports are increasingly reliant on commercial and non-aeronautical revenues to support reinvestment, fund the development of their infrastructure, invest in new carrier routes, and keep landing fees down for passengers.
That is why Duty Free: Trusted, Transparent, Secure is coordinating a clear stance on behalf of the duty-free industry against illicit trade, counterfeiting, and intellectual property theft. Our industry boasts one of the most secure in the world and generates vital revenue for the aviation, travel, and tourism industries. Only a zero-tolerance approach to criminality can ensure the survival and recovery of the wider travel sector.
